Rome Overview

The capital city of Italy and a must stop on any western Mediterranean cruise. Rome is by far one of the most amazing cities in the world to visit. From the architecture to the art to the pure history. There is no other place like it on earth.

Rome is a city of culture and hospitality and great food. The people of this great city are rich in culture. The city offers so many options for travelers. You can walk some of the most important sites in a day or take a bus ride and experience a broad view of the city.

First time visitors will be surprised to find that the city has rolling hills, the Tiber river and well laid out streets. You will find that getting around the city is easier than expected.

It is a must for any visitor to Rome to visit the Forum and the Coliseum as well as Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps.

It's important to note that you will not dock in Rome itself. Rome is approximately 1 to 1-2 hours from the actual port of Civitavecchia.

Rome City Attractions

St. Peters Basilica/ The Vatican : In the Vatican City, St. Peter's Basilica (Piazza San Pietro, daily, 7 a.m. - 7 p.m.), the earthly locus of the Roman Catholic Church, and the extensive Vatican Museums (where you'll find the Sistine Chapel) are grouped together just across the Tiber River from central Rome. In recent years visitors to St. Peter's have had to clear a security line, which can be found to the right of the main entrance. Expect to wait in line for hours if you want to visit the Vatican Museums on your own (one advantage to booking a cruise line tour is you might not have to wait quite that long). Be aware that tank tops and shorts are not acceptable attire within St. Peter's.

The Forum : The center of ancient Roman life, the Forum is not to be missed. Get your chance to stand on the ancient senate steps where Julius Caesar was stabbed. Marvel at the architecture and feel the history as you walk through the ancient Roman ruins.
